Mathematical Conversations
Wednesday, December 5

******* Please note that Harry's Bar will be closed tonight. Drinks will
be available in the Dilworth Room.

About Mathematical Conversations: We meet in Harry's Bar at 6pm, where
free drinks are provided. After 20 minutes, we move to the Dilworth
room, where the speaker gives a 20-minute talk, followed by 15 minutes
of discussion with the audience. After that we return to the bar for
further discussions. Website: https://www.math.ias.edu/math-conversations

Topic:         Two short stories on mathematical uncertainty principle
Speaker:     Eugenia Malinnikova, Norwegian University of Science and
Technology; von Neumann Fellow, School of Mathematics
Time/Room:     6:00pm - 7:30pm/Dilworth Room
Abstract Link:  http://www.math.ias.edu/seminars/abstract?event=136615

The uncertainty principle says that a function and its Fourier transform
can not be well-localized simultaneously. We will first discuss a
version of this statement for a collection of functions forming a basis
for $L^2$ space. Then we will connect Hardy's uncertainty principle to
the behavior of Schrodinger evolution and if time permits give a simple
proof of the Hardy's result.
