Dear all,
Chris Skinner and I are organizing a learning seminar on the history of Iwasawa theory. The seminar will meet 2:15-3:15pm and will track
the PU/IAS number theory seminar (so it will be held at IAS or PU according to the location of the number theory seminar).
The first talk will be TOMORROW, Thursday Feb 20, at 2:15pm in S-101 at IAS.
Iwasawa theory is now a central topic of modern algebraic number theory, concerning the variation of arithmetic invariants in infinite towers of field extensions. It was created by Iwasawa between the late 1950s and late 1960s (before that, Iwasawa's work mainly concerned topological and Lie groups.) Our goal is to understand the early history of the topic, and try to understand how the ideas developed from Iwasawa's initial work to the main conjecture. Although we won't assume any knowledge of Iwasawa theory, we will assume the audience has a good knowledge of algebraic number theory.
Akshay
