Dear Members, Visitors, and Faculty in the School of Mathematics:

Welcome to the 2023-2024 academic year!

Whether this is your first or fifth time at the School of Math, I welcome you. As the Institute works its way back to a new, if still COVID inflected, normal during this fall term, the mission of the Library, and my mission, remain the same: to support you in all of your academic and intellectual endeavors.

I hope to meet many of you in person soon, but here is a short simple(ish) guide to physical collections, here on campus and over at the Princeton University Libraries; electronic journals and books , also through our partnership with PUL; and interlibrary loan items , through our membership in OCLC and other library sharing consortiums. I will also send this out as an email in the middle of September.

Physical Collections :

· You’ll find the bulk of the physical MNS collection housed in the original Library Reading Room and Corridor on the 2 nd floor of Fuld Hall , covering about 2/3 of our book collection.

· Two other Natural Science focused libraries are in Bloomberg Hall- the Physics Library, room 201 , and the John Bahcall Astrophysics Library, room 240 .

Math and Natural Sciences journals, as well as select monographic series (e.g. Asterisque, Lecture Notes in Mathematics ) are held in the History Library basement.

· You can search all of the IAS library collections (HS-SS library as well) here: [ http://library.hs.ias.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=mnlib | http://library.hs.ias.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=mnlib ]

· All three libraries operate much the same as they did back in the 1940s: grab a book, sign the two cards in the book, dropping the cards in the boxes provided. This makes our libraries open 24/7 , with the use of your ID card .

· You can keep those books until just before you leave the IAS; I will contact you two weeks before your listed departure date for returns.

· However, if you are quarantining and cannot enter the academic buildings (or, prefer not to), you can still access physical items through our Curbside Pickup Service: [ https://library.ias.edu/libraryquarantine | https://library.ias.edu/libraryquarantine ] Curbside will be outside Fuld Hall on good weather days, and just inside the Fuld Hall entrance on rainy days.

· And if you find that you only need a particular page, chapter, or result in a book, please contact me and I am happy to provide a scanned version for you (within time and copyright constraints).

Digital (+ Princeton) :

All IAS affiliates also have faculty library privileges at Princeton University . You can even get your own library card/account and check out items independently (more on that later).

You have access to all of the University Libraries’ digital subscriptions-

through our wired network environment (in your offices or apartments);

through the Eduroam WiFi network (after configuring it to the IAS'S WPAD profile): [ https://www.ias.edu/princeton-library-resource-setup-guide | https://www.ias.edu/princeton-library-resource-setup-guide ]

or through IAS’s OpenVPN client (when you’re off campus): [ https://www.ias.edu/openvpn-installation-guide | https://www.ias.edu/openvpn-installation-guide ]

· Access to most of these collections should be seamless; keep an eye out for “Provided By Princeton University”, or a similar phrase.

· All of Princeton’s collections, digital and physical, can be searched here: [ https://catalog.princeton.edu/ | https://catalog.princeton.edu/ ] (Also a good place to figure out which digital location has which era of which journal.)

A few e-resources may require the additional credential of a Princeton University NetID. If you would like to have a Princeton University NetID set up, please fill out our handy form, and the intake process will take about a week or so: [ https://library.ias.edu/PUnetid | https://library.ias.edu/PUnetid ]

For those of you with intermittent needs, not available in the IAS collection but held by Lewis Science Library, please contact me using this form: [ https://library.ias.edu/mn/ias/lewisrequest | https://library.ias.edu/mn/ias/lewisrequest ]

For those with more extensive PUL collection or access needs, you can apply for a PUL card here:

[ https://library.ias.edu/netidconnect | https://library.ias.edu/netidconnect ]

Please be aware: due to the continuing effect of COVID, PUL policies have a tendency to change quickly. Check your email or our library website regularly to keep yourself on top of things.

Interlibrary Loan :

· While IAS and Princeton cover most needs, you also have access to materials at many partner libraries through our excellent Interlibrary Loan Specialist, Karen Downing ( [ https://library.ias.edu/hs/ias/ill | https://library.ias.edu/hs/ias/ill ] ).

· I’m also happy to do any detective work first, to make sure ILL is the best access option. However, what ILL is able to get depends on what the partner libraries are open or willing to provide. As always, please bear patiently with us.

I’m happy to talk with you about just about anything! Email ( [ mailto:emoore at ias.edu | emoore at ias.edu ] ) is the best way to contact me, and to set up a Zoom meeting; you can also reach me in Fuld 211 Mondays-Fridays, 8AM-4:30PM at 609-734-8181 .

I hope to make this coming term as productive, happy, and fulfilling as it can possibly be for all of you!

Best regards from your devoted Librarian,

Emma C. Moore
