[math-ias] Temporary HVAC Unit @ Bloomberg Hall Data Center
Institute for Advanced Study

Fri Dec 2 16:50:28 EST 2016
Installation of the temporary cooling lines at the Kitchen Expansion
construction site will require a shutdown of the chilled water system that
cools the main Data Center in Bloomberg Hall. Because the Data Center
provides all computing and internet services for the Institute it must be
kept operational. In order to do that, a truck mounted portable HVAC unit
will be placed outside the east end of Bloomberg Hall to cool the Data
Center during the shutdown.
The temporary HVAC unit will provide air to cool the Data Center using
flexible ducts which will go from the truck, through the vestibule outside
the IT/computer area, and into the server room. Although access into and
out of Bloomberg Hall will be maintained for safety purposes, the ground
floor vestibule area will be congested. It's recommended that, on the day
of the shutdown, you enter and exit Bloomberg Hall using the main lobby.
The shutdown is currently planned for Wednesday (12/7), with the unit
arriving Tuesday afternoon so it can be set up and tested. But weather
and other conditions may affect the exact date. We will update you early
next week when we finalize the schedule. The shutdown itself is expected
to last from 4-6 hours beginning before 8 am. Once the tie-in work is
complete and the temporary chilled water lines are operational, the
portable HVAC unit will be removed.
To those faculty, members, and staff who have offices at that end of the
Bloomberg Hall, the HVAC unit may create some noise, but it should be
minimal.
